Our Shih Tzu Whelping Box

A woman inspecting the sanding on a custom-built wooden whelping box for Shih Tzu puppies.

Build One "Gen1"

We decided to build our own boxes many years ago...

because we never really found anything out there commercially available that we liked.

A Shih Tzu mommy looking out from her new whelping box with a smile on her face.

But why is the whelping box so important?

Properly built whelping boxes actually protect the pups during their most vulnerable stages.

Build Six "Gen6"

Helps regulate the temperature and insulate from heat loss.

BONUS! The roof creates a "den like" feeling for the mother.

The box is NEVER placed directly on the floor (heat loss). Floor base incorporates R10 insulation.

Our Newest Version

Build Seven "Gen7"

Greater efficiency at maintaining a constant temperature and long term durability.

Amber light aids REM sleep.

We use amber lighting at night and indirect "daylight bulb" lighting during the day.

Did you know?

Most newborn deaths occur from puppies becoming chilled.

At birth, the puppy's body temperature matches Mom's.

It then instantly falls by a number of degrees based on the specific room temperature.

A newborn puppy can't generate body heat until 1 to 2 weeks old so it's vital that a constant temperature of 80 to 85 degrees be maintained.
